60% of Canadians believe God had either a direct or indirect role in creating mankind. 60%. Take that, you God hating heathens. I especially appreciate that 26% (i.e. one in four!) say that God created humans alone within the last 10,000 years or so. In your face, Darwinistas!

NFL season starts very soon. If you want in on a Halifax-based pick 'em pool in its fourth year, head over to www.SidelinesPool.ca. All coinage ($20cdn) goes back as prizes, and it's all web based for your convenience.

The keeper of secret mysteries may not have acted alone in that infamous "thirty silver Tyrian shekels" affair - he may have cooperated with the very person he betrayed.

Once again, a modern and architecturally interesting new proposed development in the downtown core has come up for public debate. City Staff approved the preliminary design for the building, indicating it meets the city bylaws and restrictions. And once again, all the nuts are coming out of the woodwork to decry such a development, leaning on any reasoning they can muster to try and stall it and ultimately kill this $150 million investment.

Those spine.cx dorks who do not purchase computers or electronics can feel free to ignore this item. Other folks might be interested in reading more about the NS Government's Proposed Regulations for Reducing Electronic Waste. My opinion - a noble idea with a horribly impractical proposed implementation. Comments from concerned citizens are due April 11th, 2005.

As celebrated on the Olsen Twins Countdown site, June 13th 2004 is the day the Mary-Kate and Ashley turn 18. No doubt S2k and Big Al feel a bit cleaner today.

So we're all well familiar with the levy on Blank media; we've discussed it on Spine Once or Twice. But now there is a new twist on this old theme.
CTV news is reporting "Canada's songwriters will ask the Supreme Court of Canada next week to force Internet service providers to pay them royalties for the millions of digital music files downloaded each year by Canadians." WTF? So it wasn't enough to assume that everyone using blank media is a music pirate, now they need to get out that broad brush and paint all the people who use the 'net as music pirates - Let alone pirates of Canadian music?!?! Incredible. Simply incredible.

So it looks like workin' for the man just got a little bit easier; some new changes came into effect at the end of last month in the labour code after being passed in the fall sitting of the legislature. This catches us up to other provinces, and also helps out those salaried employees who have, on occasion, been forced into working overtime for free.

Guzzlefish is an oddly named site where users can track some of their collections online. What sort of collections? CDs, DVDs and games. The clean interface, interesting statistics and ease of use make this site great. Read inside for my review.

So the Canadian Alliance and the Progressive Conservatives have reached a tentative agreement to unite their two parties, in the hopes a united front will help them face the Liberal hegemony in the next election (who will be led by Paul Martin). What do Spine's politically minded dorks (if any) think of it all?

So I was forwarded this column a couple days ago, which originally appeared in the Halifax Daily News back on Sept. 19th. According to David Swick, "Frozen doughnuts, fried in a factory near Toronto and trucked 2,000 kilometres, are about to replace fresh, locally made doughnuts at stores in Atlantic Canada."

In our quest to keep Spine readers informed, here's a newish trend gaining popularity in recent weeks - Flash Mobs. These are groups (sometimes known as 'flocks') of people who connect online and arrange to meet, do something brief and silly (like playing an abridged 'Marco Polo' outside a restaurant, or bursting into 15 seconds of applause in a hotel) and then simply disperse.
Any Spine dorks ever been in on one of these Flash Mobs? Ever hear of one in Halifax? If you were organizing one, what kind of stunts would you arrange? Posted by Bruce on 2003-07-28 12:00:30
University Researchers in Calgary have developed a pill that can monitor you from the inside, and dispense medications as required. No word yet on whether Dennis Quaid is somehow involved.
What do Spine Dorks think about having a mechanical pill inside you, working it's way through your gullet, dispensing drugs as it goes along? Posted by Bruce on 2003-07-22 11:40:52
For those interested, the CBC will be carrying a debate between a few hopefuls for the premiership of this province. Hamm will be defending his four-year record; one can only hope they unify the belts, like when Hulk Hogan fought the Ultimate Warrior at Wrestlemania in Skydome...

Let's take a brief and wistful journey through time and space to the present day, where time travel is not yet a reality, just a plot device abused by Star Trek:Enterprise. Join me now for what passes as my review of Arnold's new flick, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines - sadly, there are no pulse-pounding Guns'n'Roses tunes this time (You could be mine, anyone?), so Axl fans can optionally wait by the door. Those who frequent this site likely need no refresher on the Terminator series, so I'll skip past that and share some random thoughts on the film, pretty much spoiler free - read on!

So the Winter Olympics are coming back to Canada, going to be hosted in Vancouver in 2010. Anyone thinking of going, or is it a bit too premature to plan for that yet? What are your best stories or memories of Olympic games past?

Always interested in trying new beers (though I am by no means a beer expert), I purchased a six pack of Big Rock's Honey Brown Lager at one of those newfangled private liquor boutiques. It's 5%, brewed in Calgary, and there was no expiry date that I could find; I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. The price was pretty much akin (though a little higher) to that which one would pay for a six pack of Sleeman's - an omen of sorts.

CNN is running a painful story about a climber who had his arm trapped under a boulder for a couple of days and then cut it off with his own pocketknife. So how many Spiners think they could slowly sever one of their own limbs with a pocketknife? Does it matter if you felt you'd never get rescued/found? Do you think you'd be able to survive afterwards?

Perhaps some of the younger readers can live out their dreams when the Canadian Idol auditions come to Halifax on May 13th - unfortunately you need to be between the ages of 16 and 26. Old fogies in the back row - you go home.

If you like Nigerian/Congo Scam Spam (and let's be honest, who doesn't), give Spam Radio a try. A creepy robotic voice reminiscent of Stephen Hawking reads spam aloud while new agey-music plays in the background...
